Clifftop, Inc.

Clifftop, Inc. · Silicon Valley, California · 1994–2010

Where emerging products, complex systems, developers and users met.

Clifftop, Inc. was the professional engineering services consultancy Ellen Feaheny founded and ran as principal from 1994 to 2010. Its 2008 project record lists 31 companies and consortia across networking, telecom, enterprise software, embedded systems, developer platforms, security, interoperability standards, and early web and mobile technology.

The work often went past documentation into product testing, requirements, API and SDK definition, UI evaluation, standards development, systems integration, release support and product management. Nearly all of it came through referrals and repeat clients.

Clients included Apple · AOL · Avaya · Cisco · Microsoft · Motorola · Symantec · Symbol Technologies · Visteon (Ford) · Netergy (now 8x8), and the Versit Consortium of Apple, AT&T, IBM and Siemens.

Original wording from clifftop.us is quoted or shown in panels labeled with its address and capture date. Notes marked “Looking back · 2026” are written now.

Selected work

Ten of the 32 engagements, chosen for range. Every one is in the full archive with its original wording.

How it startedThe first big engagement came by referral. A product manager introduced Ellen to a manager at Apple, who hired her on the spot for the Versit Consortium work. That ran two years, and the referrals that followed built the rest of the client list.

Our Value Plan

Our value plan is our business belief system or philosophies to guide our everyday efforts. We believe these principles drive successful relations, as well as immediate and long-term success.

As a business built almost exclusively on referrals and repeat client work, letting down our guard on these values is simply not an option.

Client Satisfaction, Integrity Driven Work

  • Your satisfaction trumps all and is the highest priority
  • Engaged, proactive, respectful, and strategically “listening” communications
  • Initiative and action, not excuses; the job will be done, right, and with good energy
  • Always deliver, and deliver well
  • Small job, large job, easy job, hard job, dumb job, smart job - all OK ... it all needs to get done, already!

Professional, Technical, Adaptable, Flexible, and Efficient

  • Maintain technological “fitness” (adept and flexible) to evolving product designs and technologies
  • Short timelines? Let’s talk about it, figure out a plan, and make it happen. There’s always a way!
  • Latest and most efficient tools (software), methodologies, and strategies
  • We do not rest on our laurels, learning every day for continual improvement

The turn

October 2008

In October 2008, a recruiter told Ellen she was “not technical enough” for a role. Two calls later, another told her she was “too technical.”

It made clear something the Clifftop years had been showing all along: her best work didn’t fit a standard job category. She was most useful where product, technology, customers, implementation and commercial reality overlapped.

Rather than narrow the work to fit a title, she moved further into that overlap: first an Atlassian consulting practice through Clifftop, then CustomWare’s US operation, and then AppFusions.

The category problem became the business opportunity.

What came next

Clifftop’s last client was CustomWare. From February 2009 to February 2010, under contract, Clifftop served as CustomWare’s US office (see the archive entry).

In March 2010, Ellen co-founded AppFusions with Patrick Li and led it as CEO for 13 years. AppFusions turned recurring enterprise integration patterns into packaged products and served more than 500 enterprise customers. Its integration and authentication work later moved onto AlohaCloud, a vendor-neutral cloud platform.

Looking back · 2026Clifftop is where that approach started: working across companies and systems, keeping standards consistent, testing what a product actually does, and learning unfamiliar technology quickly.
